Negar Kamali is a multidisciplinary artist and choreographer whose work encompasses dance, theater, photography, videography, and woodworking. Since 2011, she has been teaching Persianate and Iranian dance, as well as contemporary dance. Her extensive travels across Iran have profoundly influenced her creative practice, inspiring choreography that reflects the country’s diverse geography and rich literary heritage. Currently, Negar is pursuing an MFA in Experimental Choreography at the University of California, Riverside, where she is the first Iranian student in the program. She views the body as a dynamic space for exploring curiosity and transformation, believing that her artwork embodies experiences she has lived, is living, or will live. Through performances that delve into themes of displacement, identity, memory, and sensation, she creates works that offer a visceral connection between movement and meaning. As an active member of the Iranian Dance Studies Working Group within the Dance Studies Association, Negar contributes to the dialogue and collaboration among dancers, choreographers, and scholars in Iran and across the diaspora.
